Behavioral therapy approaches deal with a person’s interactions with their environment. Most therapists who use a behavioral approach will help to retrain a person’s behavior or reactions to some type of stimulus. You can also reward the patient for good behavior or punish them for bad behavior. This type of therapy helps the most when treating phobias or even obsessive behaviors.
Cognitive therapy focuses on the mental functions or the thinking of a person. Using this type of therapy, the therapist will help the patient to assess their thoughts and/or beliefs and why things happen.
The cognitive approach in my opinion, is effective when working with clients because it helps to understand the why rather than just the action. The only disadvantage in my opinion, is the possibility of bringing up negative thoughts that the client may not want to address.
