Caselet Write-Up Guidelines

The case-study approach has long been used in business schools as a way of improving business managers’ thinking and understanding. The caselet that we will discuss is chosen to highlight examples of microeconomics in action. The articles represent microeconomic concepts as seen in the business world and are taken directly from the business and popular press.

The written caselet should be no more than a maximum of 2-pages.

  • Assume I read the article and am familiar with the situation. The caselet writeup is not a time to summarize the article. Assume the audience has read a brief on the situation and is familiar.
  • Bring in and apply class tools – examples could include supply & demand curve shifts, elasticity, market structures, etc. – also try to bring in your unique perspectives and experiences.
  • Clearly define the following three items:

1) Problem or situation identification

a. What do you see as the key problem or situation?

2)Analysis

  1. Bring in as many tools from the class as are relevant to assessing the situation.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to use these tools in the right way and correct context.
  3. Use information and data from the article to support your analysis.

3)Conclusion or recommended Action plan

a. Using your analysis, what is your conclusion or recommendation?

i. Here, you could (but do not have to) brainstorm potential courses of action management could take ii. Bring in your perspectives and experiences to the extent practical

Please don’t hesitate to start working on this.

Please note: Your grade on the caselet will reflect your application of economic analysis as it relates to corporate strategy. A wonderfully intelligent commentary that uses no class tools will not earn a high score. Caselet write-ups are your opportunity to demonstrate the ability to bring in class concepts in the right ways at the right times and turn your understanding of those concepts into useful action in a real-life situation.

Please find attached various articles to choose from but you only must choose one (1) article to complete the caselet, and also find attached the class tools to be used for the caselet.

Case: Mathias v. St. Catherine’s Hospital, Inc.

The case summary presented below is from George Pozgar (2016). The published court opinion is linked at References.

Mrs. Mathias, Dr. Witt’s patient at St. Catherine’s Hospital, delivered a son by Caesarean section on February 2, 1993, while she was under general anesthesia. In the operating room, Dr. Witt indicated that he needed an instrument typically used in tubal ligation. Operating room nurses, Ms. Snyder and Ms. Perri, employees of St. Catherine’s, looked at Mathias’ chart. Snyder informed Witt that she did not see a signed informed consent form for tubal ligation in the chart. In deposition testimony prior to trial, Snyder stated that Witt replied, “Oh, OK.”

Witt performed a tubal ligation on Mathias. Three days after the procedure, a nurse brought Mathias a consent form for the procedure, told the patient that the form was, “Just to close up our records.” This nurse testified in her deposition that she signed nurse Perri’s name on the consent form and backdated it to February 2, 1993—the day the surgery was performed. The trial court noted that these actions occurring after the surgery were not material to the hospital’s duty to Mathias.

The trial court granted summary judgment, dismissing St. Catherine’s Hospital from the Mathias’ medical malpractice action. Mr. and Mrs. Mathias appealed, contending that the hospital owed a duty to prevent the tubal ligation for which there was no signed consent. The appellate court’s holding affirmed the earlier trial court’s judgment. St. Catherine’s Hospital was therefore found not liable (pp. 317-318).

  1. Post to your team’s discussion board 4-6 concepts, items, ideas, etc. that you feel should be included in your team’s final presentation.
  2. Post to your team’s discussion board any concepts, items, ideas, etc. that you feel do NOT need to be included in your team’s final presentation. These might be concepts or details from the course that though necessary to encourage critical thinking in students in this course are not necessary for an introductory presentation on what nursing is.
  3. Post to your team’s discussion board your suggestions for a means of presenting the information and creative methods for displaying it. Remember, the final presentation must be electronic so that it can be posted to the National Society for Nursing Advancement website and accessed at random times by National Society for Nursing Advancement members.
  4. In addition to your original submission, you must make well-developed meaningful comments on all your teammate’s postings. For this assignment, your responses, meaningful comments, and resources might be used to make decisions on what ultimately should be included in the final presentation.
  5. Meaningful comments require some thinking and analysis on your part. For example, look for and describe ideas that are common among various students’ comments; or ones that are different; or ones that present a view in a way you had not considered; or share information about how someone’s comment is the same or different from what you have experienced in the workplace. Phrases like “I agree” or “You, go girl”, though acceptable, do not by themselves constitute the thinking and analysis intended by the words “meaningful comment.”
  6. You must respond to all teammates’ initial posts. You will be graded on the quality and the quantity of participation in the assignment.
  7. Note that well-developed and meaningful doesn’t necessarily mean long. If you can articulate your thoughts in a few sentences, that is fine.
  8. You must post your ideas on your team’s discussion board very early in the week so discussion and creation of the final project may occur. Therefore, this forum will not be moderated.
  9. Be sure to review the Tips for Success given below for further help with t
