WEEK 2 DISCUSSION: PHONY INVOICE SCAMS

Prompt

A popular method for defrauding a company is to issue a phony invoice. The scam begins by initially contacting the target firm to discover details of key business contacts, business operations, and products. The swindler then uses this information to create a fictitious invoice. The invoice will include names, figures, and other details to give it the appearance of legitimacy. Scott County Schools was a victim of the above scam in 2017.

Scott County Schools in Kentucky announced that it was the victim of a major attack that resulted in a loss of $3.7 million. This was a typical invoice scam where the school was notified that an invoice was outstanding, the school duly paid the fake invoice. Once the fact this was a wire fraud incident, the FBI was contacted, and attempts were made to recover the funds. Initially, it was it is unclear whether it will be possible to recover the money. Just today it was confirmed that the school district in Kentucky recovered the $3.7 million stolen by the hacker in this cyber wire fraud scam.

Initial Post

  • Begin by reading the prompt
  • Answer the two (2) discussion questions:
    1. How can scams like this be avoided?
    2. What policies should be implemented by companies to detect phony invoices sooner?

Reply Posts

Replies are a way for you to have a conversation with your online classmates. This is the give-and-take of listening and responding like a face-to-face conversation. Remember to be polite and respectful of difference, uniqueness, and the unknown.

  • You will reply two (2) times: (1) an affirmative role AND (2) defensive role to two or more of your classmates.
  • Read or view a classmates post.
  • Once you are ready, click on the Reply right beneath their post
  • Post either a 1-2 minutes video reply or a word text reply.
    • Affirmative role:
      • Students respond with supporting statements and are required to back statements with additional facts/resources (i.e. opinions, polls, articles, memes, etc)
    • Defense role:
      • Students respectfully disagree and also support your statement with additional facts/resources (i.e. opinions, polls, articles, memes, etc

Student 1:

After reading the prompt above, scams like the one with Scott County Schools in Kentucky can be avoided by doing a few things. An article from The Credit Protection Association recommends using 3-way matching, watching invoice amounts, or keeping up moral within the company (Salmon, 2019). The operations director James Salmon also recommended checking on supplies, tracking invoice activity, and several other protocols to avoid invoice scams.

A policy that should be implemented by companies to detect phony invoices would be to implement “fuzzy matching”. If companies have a program that allows fuzzy matching this would allow for the company to catch near-duplicates or identical invoices.

Student 2:

Scammers have a tendency to lie and manipulate. Don’t be fooled or put under pressure and assume you owe the debt. Scams like these could possibly be avoided by being cautious and verifying the liabilities on your balance sheet. If it’s a significant amount of money, I would subtly interrogate them. Setting clear policies that companies can follow to detect phony scammers can prevent such losses. For example, you must verify your debts with your companies accountants to make sure you even owe a debt. Then, phony invoice issuer must provide traceable info that can be used so that if a scam were to happen, it can be traced back to them.

WEEK 2 DISCUSSION: ON BEING GREEN

Prompt

Process manufacturing often involves significant energy and material resources, which can be harmful to the environment. Thus, many process manufacturing companies, such as chemical, electronic, and metal processors, must address environmental issues. Companies such as DuPont, Intel, Apple, and Alcoa are at the forefront of providing environmental solutions for their products and processes.

For example, Apple provides free recycling programs for Macs, iPhones, and iPads. Apple recovers more than 90% by weight of the original product in reusable components, glass, and plastic. You can even receive a free gift card for voluntarily recycling an older Apple product.

Initial Post

  • Begin by reading the prompt
  • Answer the three (3) discussion questions:
    1. Do you think believe these efforts are enough to address environmental issues? Why or why not?
    2. What are the cost associated with companies implementing recycling programs? Does cost outweigh benefits
    3. Who’s responsibility is it to eliminate environmental waste?

Student 1:

After reading the prompt, I do not think the efforts listed above are enough to address environmental issues. Although I think that it’s a good start by recycling old products that are no longer being used, I do not think that it’s enough to make a significant dent in the ongoing environmental issues our world has. I think that companies need to find better and more environmentally friendly ways in which they manufacture their products.

The cost associated with companies implementing recycling programs would be very little in comparison to the benefits that recycling has on the environment and the economy. Especially for electronic recycling programs such as the one through Apple, these recycling programs can help to reduce air pollution, save land and energy, and reduces the production cost of goods such as Apple electronics (techdump.org).

Due to the Waste Act, waste holders including private individuals, property owners, or companies are primarily responsible for eliminating environmental waste.

Student 2:

1. I think the current efforts companies follow do remain green aren’t enough to deal with the environmental issues. Just because many big companies are the main source carbon emission and there should be carbon tax to really help our environment and cut the emissions carbon we produce as a nation .

2..The associated cost with implementing recycling programs it will have a big price tag start these programs to mange recycling . Many argue that this would double energy consumption and cause pollution while cost tax payer dollar to dispose of old regular trash. Recycling may help the environment but at same time it cost energy to recycle which cause pollution. I think sometimes the benefits outweigh the cons,3

3. The Unites States Environmental Protection Agency is responsible to eliminate environmental waste and enforcing the standard codes. EPA takes action by protecting communities from illegal and high risk hazardous waste operations.

POST 1

1) You are the nurse caring for a postoperative appendectomy patient who had surgery 6 hours ago. The following tasks need completing:

  • Assess the patient’s ability to drink clear liquids.
  • Determine the amount eaten.
  • Document the patient’s tolerance of clear liquids.
  • Assess the patient’s tolerance for sitting at the side of the bed.
  • Assess the patient’s tolerance for ambulating.
  • Document the patient’s tolerance for activity.
  • Assess the patient’s pain level.
  • Provide education about activity levels.

The following tasks can be delegated by the RN: The unlicensed assistive personnel can be delegated by the RN to determine the amount eaten. Also the documentation assignments can be delegated as long as they are given to the proper staff such as a licensed practical nurse. The nurse cannot delegate tasks involving assessments, patient education, or the diagnosis of human responses (Zerwekh, 2021). The unlicensed assistive personnel is able to determine the amount eaten, because this does not involve an assessment, patient education, or any diagnosis.

A licensed practical nurse is able to determine the amount eaten, document the patient’s tolerance of clear liquids, document the patient’s tolerance for ambulating, and assess pain level. Because they are not performing an actual assessment and just questioning for pain level, they are able to do so (LPN vs RN… 2020). Only the registered nurse can perform assessments on patients and provide education. The medication aide can also ask the patient what their pain level is before administering medications. This is all they can do in this situation. The nursing assistant can be delegated to determine the amount eaten by the patient by checking their tray after a meal and reporting it to the nurse.

If the medication aide was delegated to give one of my patients pain medication, I would be able to assess the outcome. The outcome would be that the patient would have a lower pain level than the one reported before receiving medication. After the medication aide passed the pain medication, I would then be able to go back and assess the patient’s reported pain level. The pain level should be lower than before they received the medication. The task and delegation would prove to be effective.

POST 2

As stated in this week’s PowerPoint the RN is responsible for a comprehensive physical assessment, developing a plan of care for the patient, provides patient teaching and discharge planning, and evaluates the patient’s responses to the plan of care. Based on those responsibilities any task including an assessment or patient education cannot be delegated. If the nurse can delegate some tasks to unlicensed assistive personal, more time can be devoted to those tasks that cannot be delegated, especially complex patient care” (Sullivan, 2018, pg165). Determining the amount of food that the patient has eaten can be delegated if an assessment of bowel sounds and toleration of food has already been conducted. This could be delegated to both a nursing assistant and an LPN. An example of an outcome for this task could be that the patient will eat 75% of their meal and the nursing assistant or LPN documented that correctly. With this task being delegated to the appropriate person I could evaluate the ability of the patient to achieve the outcome by assessing the patient’s chart or food tray to see if they ate 75% of their food. If they did not eat any of their food and did not achieve the outcome this may warrant an RN assessment to see why they are not eating. “Although it is not within the scope of practice of the LPN to perform a complete assessment, the LPN can greatly contribute to the plan of care and in collaboration with the registered nurse, provide quality nursing care” (KBN Connection, 2018, pg.8). An LPN cannot be fully delegated these tasks but can perform them with the supervision of the RN if the RN has deemed this patient stable. For example, the LPN could collect information from the patient about normal activity levels to help the nurse with background information so they can better educate the patient. “The RN must be readily available to assess and evaluate the response. For a patient whose condition is stable and predictable, and rapid change is not anticipated, the supervisor may provide supervision of the LPN without being physically present, but shall be readily available” (KBN Connection, 2018, pg.9). For example, the LPN can be delegated to assess the patient’s tolerance for ambulating, sitting on the side of the bed, tolerance for clear liquids, and activity if the patient is stable. This patient is only 6 hours post-op so the nurse should likely still assume the role for these tasks. The nursing assistant could also assist the nurse in some of these tasks but as I mentioned can only be delegated to determine the amount of food the patient has eaten. The nursing assistant could help with tasks such as sitting the patient up on the side of the bed for the nurse to assess their tolerance to it or assisting with ambulation for the RN to assess as well. When it comes to documentation as we have learned if you did not do it do not document it. In this case, the RN is in charge of the tasks requiring documentation so they should be in charge of documenting the results to those as well. No medications are being given so a medication aid would not be helpful at this time unless the patient reported a high pain level during the RN assessment then they could give them medication for pain.

The discussion for this week is on the video clips on New York just before and during the Revolutionary War and on the First Amendment to the Constitution.  The prompt for this weeks discussion is:

What change described in these videos had the greatest impact on the colonies and why?

Each week we will watch a short video clip or two (or three) that goes along with the weekly topic. There will be a discussion board writing assignment on the video clip and a question or two on the quiz about them. They are drawn from a variety of sources but as we move along in the course most will come from a documentary on the history of New York. While some of what New York goes through is specific to that town, much of what it experiences can be generalized to many/most cities throughout the United States, even if they experience it years or decades later.  Slavery was not just a southern institution, there was also a widespread use of slaves in some northern cities including New York. With increasing tensions there is a viscous suppression of a slave uprising in New York in the 1740s.The events leading up to the Revolution including: the French & Indian War, the arrival of Alexander Hamilton, and the growing tensions over British control, including the issue of taxation. Also, the role that New York played in the Revolutionary war and its impact on New York.Thomas Jefferson and the Baptists struggle for a separation of church and state. Leading to the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom and eventually the 1st Amendment.

hello could you please make a comment on this student’s post? Thank you very much Student post: The thing that had the biggest impact on the colonies was the taxation of everything by the British. The British had decided that people should pay taxes on everything in their lives. New York was already in a state of depression due to the British fleet leaving and the New Yorkers were not able to make as much money as they were before. When times were already extremely hard on them a tyrannical ruler was trying to take more money away from them. This frustrated the people of New York and in 1765 there was a brief rebellion that only harmed an effigy of the Royal governor but that did not last long as they quickly erected a statue to show their loyalty to King George III.  People had to live with the rule of the British government and being mistreated until in 1774 Alexander Hamilton really started to rally the citizens of New York. He released a pamphlet that pointed out how they were free men and should rebel against the British government. After a year of rallying the people of New York to believe in themselves and that they were free, in 1775 the British killed Americans at Lexington and Concord. This was a critical part in the start of the Revolutionary War that won America its independence from British rule.

Can you help me understand this Dance question?

Part 1

When we watched the hip-hop video during “Week 1”, something stood out to me. There is a moment when hip-hop artist Rennie Harris refers to Fosse (Bob Fosse-famous for jazz in the US) and Balanchine (famous for innovating American ballet). This moment goes by very quickly in that video but Rennie Harris is talking about the African influence that made the work of these choreographers “new” and “modern” and “innovative”. Elements like “grounded-ness”, “polycentrism”, “polyrhythm”, “assymmetry”, and “the aesthetic of the cool” are a few of those elements in the choreography of both Fosse and Balanchine.

Read the essay “The Diaspora Dance Boom” written by dance-scholar Brenda Dixon-Gottschild.

Choose The Diaspora Dance Boom under Essays (Links to an external site.)

Respond by recording yourself or typing up responses to the following:

  1. What is the author’s premise/thesis/main point?
  2. What sources does the author refer to in the essay? Name one or two. (choreographer? dance company? author?)
  3. Describe in your own words one of the Africanist Aesthetics (examples include poly-centered, grounded to the earth, aesthetic of the cool).

Part 2

Great work responding to the first part of this assignment.

Continue here if you also looked at Balanchine’s “Agon” in the “compare and contrast” discussion this week.

Below are the video again and Brenda Dixon-Gottschild’s essay “The Diaspora Dance Boom”.

For part 2 of this assignment:

  1. Find an example of the Africanist presence in the duet.
  2. Describe in your own words the Africanist Aesthetic principle or Africanist element that you see in the duet.
  3. Share the time stamp in the video that shows your example.

***Looking at part 1 of the article response will help point you to what we are looking for (also detailed in pp 3-5 in the essay).

Visit the OSHA website and locate Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Health Care and Social Service Workers (www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3148.pdf (Links to an external site.)).  Comment on why these guidelines came into existence, scope of the problem, risk factors and assistance programs available.

Response #1 (250 words and 1 reference)

These Guidelines by OSHA came into existence to help reduce workplace violence in workplace violence in the healthcare setting. OSHA has identified four different settings with guidelines, and they include hospital, residential treatment, non-residential treatment/service, community care, and fieldwork. Those who work in a healthcare or social service setting are at a higher risk of facing violence in the workplace. This violence has primarily come from patients and long-term care residents because of pain, unfamiliar surroundings, and disease progression (OSHA, 2016). Unfortunately, the workplace setting does measure the types of hazards that are going to exist in the environment therefore when healthcare workers are working with individuals who have a history of violence, drug abuse, and gang members the risk for violence increases. However, risk factors can also come from the organization/institution one is employed. For example, a risk factor listed is the perception that violence is tolerated, and the victims cannot report the incident (OSHA, 2016). I think this risk factor is extremely important because many healthcare workers may feel that they are not able to report the incident. A worker who experiences violence is also at risk for experiencing very intense emotions like anxiety, depression, and flashbacks to the event (Zerwekh & Zerwekh Garneau, 2021). I also feel that there is a stigma surrounding healthcare workers that when they experience workplace violence it is “part of the job” as they chose to be in that profession. Yet, any type of workplace violence is completely unacceptable and should not happen to any worker. With that, there are a plethora of assistance programs available for the employees regarding OSHA. An assistance program I personally liked was the Compliance Assistance Specialists. These specialists are available nationwide and can give information to workers regarding OSHA standards, rights, responsibilities, and educational programs on specific standards (OSHA, 2016). I think this is very beneficial to the workers as they can call an assistance specialist when they are unsure about any hazards they may encounter.

Response #2 (250 words and 1 reference)

OSHA was created in the late 1960s to the early 1970s. According to the Department of Labor, “Disabling injuries increased 20 percent during the decade, and 14,000 workers were dying on the job each year”. OSHA is used and was created to prevent workplace violence and injury. OSHA is something practiced in every business and job. When I worked at Aldi I had to maintain OSHA compliance by completing many online scenarios and show my managers I could effectively use heavy equipment. According to the OSHA website, “For healthcare workers, assaults comprise 10-11% of workplace injuries involving days away from work, as compared to 3% of injuries of all private sector employees”(OSHA, 2016,pg.2). I was shocked to see that healthcare services receive more injuries and assaults compared to any other occupation. This number may even increase due to the number of assaults that are not reported in healthcare.

Risk factors that OSHA looks at is identifying and assessing workplace violence hazards. Due to the increase in assaults and injuries that come from the healthcare and social services profession, OSHA takes a look at behaviors and areas like psychiatry and long-term care facilities which may cause more injuries and how to reduce it. Additional risk factors include looking at individuals, are you working alone in a facility, are working with people who are withdrawing from drugs, or have a history of violence. OSHA also considers organizational factors, like does your hospital have policies, are they up to the standards they need to be, and do the workers follow them correctly.

OSHA does have violence prevention programs, which includes going to a company within question to work on appropriate procedures. They expand changes within the facility including managers, clients and procedures. After a violence prevention program new changes should be reassessed to make sure they are up to date and work well for the facility.

  2. What stands out?
  3. What is the role of dance/performance in the article?
  4. What else?

Article list

  1. This first article reminds me of something Rennie Harris said in the hip-hop video. Dancers don’t always get credit for what they have brought to the American dance scene. This has been happening overtime. I think Rennie mentions George Balanchine and Bob Fosse because they were both innovators in their fields (contemporary ballet and jazz), but they never credited the Africanist Aesthetics (and specific movements) that led to their work being “new” and innovative. Take a look at how these Chicago dancers bring attention to this dance!

I’m studying for my Dance class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

CW//The following concept in American theatrical history contains content that is disturbing.

We will begin this week by examining a phenomenon in American performance history.

Here is a definition from britannica.com.

“Blackface minstrelsy, also called blackface, indigenous American theatrical form that constituted a subgenre of the minstrel show. Intended as comic entertainment, blackface minstrelsy was performed by a group of white minstrels (traveling musicians) with black-painted faces, whose material caricatured the singing and dancing of slaves. The form reached the pinnacle of its popularity between 1850 and 1870, when it enjoyed sizeable audiences in both the United States and Britain. Although blackface minstrelsy gradually disappeared from the professional theatres and became purely a vehicle for amateurs, its influence endured in later entertainment genres and media, including vaudeville theatre, radio and television programs, and the world-music and motion picture industries of the 20th and 21st centuries”.

What stands out to you in this definition and what might you add?

Share your thoughts below.
