2.4 Discussion of Lexical Coverage

  1. How would you evaluate your understanding of each text? Do you agree that you need at least 98% lexical coverage to adequately understand academic texts such as the one above?
  2. Why might it be difficult to understand excerpts such as the ones above even if you know the majority of vocabulary words that appear in the text?

1. How would you evaluate your understanding of each text? Do you agree that you need at least 98% lexical coverage to adequately understand academic texts such as the one above?

I personally think to understand a text is not only to understand the main topic of a passage. Readers have to realize what authors really want to express in the passage. The main argument(s) in the article is the key to examine myself. Additionally, summarize the entire passage is another great way to ensure readers really understand the text. I hold neutral opinion for the argument “Do you agree that you need at least 98% lexical coverage to adequately understand academic texts such as the one above” because sometimes we do not have to understand or check almost every new words we encountered. On the contrary, checking every new words in a reading passage reduce reader’s reading efficiency because sometimes readers can guessing what the meaning of the new word by combine context between the new word. However, if we have to doing research on a topic or a specific major we have to admit that knowing at least 98% is pretty necessary since words are the basis of understanding profound academic articles.

2. Why might it be difficult to understand excerpts such as the ones above even if you know the majority of vocabulary words that appear in the text?

I guess it’s hard for us to understand excerpts because the text are only a part of the entire passage. Due to it’s a small part from the passage, it might hard for readers to combine and guess some words that they are not familiar with. Also, I guess because the excerpts are consider as an academic passage. Academic passage is harder than other type of passage/articles in my point of view. Thus, that is why even if we know the majority, we still feel hard to understand the excerpts.

2.7Review the table of vocabulary learning strategies (Table 2.1) and reflect on which strategies you (1) use most often, (2) never use, and (3) would like to use more. Discuss these strategies with a partner

– use most often: Metacognitive strategies (I personally think understand the main words in a passage is necessary since it help readers understand the entire passage)

– never use: Guessing strategies(I know myself is not good at guessing words by the root of a word so I perhaps cannot be a great speculator for this reading strategies) Dictionary strategies (It’s pretty waste of time in my opinion since checking dictionary too many times negatively affect my joyful reading emotion. It’s too troublesome for me)

– would like to use more: Metacognitive strategies (I personally think understand the main words in a passage is necessary since it help readers understand the entire passage. Additionally, it does help me remember more words due to if y guessing is close to the real meaning I will pretty happy!) Note-taking strategies (I sometimes enjoy to taking notes while I’m reading because I can summarize the main idea for a small chapter. Notes taking help me better understand the text) Memory strategies(I would like to practice the pronunciation of a new word due to I really like to catch every chance to practice my English speaking and I want to learn not only the definition of the new word but also the oral part while I’m reading) Activation strategies (As I mentioned in the previous reading strategies that I pay high attention to speaking skill. Thus, I would like to put the new words in the real situation such as a conversation and pronounce them)
