In Complaints and Disorders: The Sexual Politics of Sickness, Ehrenreich and English explore aspects of the U.S. medical professional landscape circa 1865-1920 (and beyond). Their central ‘big picture’ punchline is that gender has/does intersect with class/socioeconomic status (SES) and race. These intersections are patterned such that particular groups of women are conceptualized, understood, valued, and (mis)treated in particular ways vis-à-vis other women and others in society.

The purpose of the final paper is for you to integrate your site experiences with what you have been learning in the DCRS program.

Since the practicum sequence is a student-driven and student-centered activity, progress lies with the student. Substantial progress will be measured by how well the student has synthesized and demonstrated identifiable substance, theory, and process applications at the practicum site and systematically examined and presented their efforts and findings in written form. This paper serves as a final summary of the internship experience with relevant attachments demonstrating the work accomplished during practicum and your reflection on the experience. In essence, you are expected to provide tangible evidence of the execution of the Learning Contract and your growth as a practitioner.

Structure and Organization

The paper has 5 distinct content sections, and each part should be listed as such. In addition, there should be a list of references and Appendices.

I. Introduction

A strategic plan is about thinking, organizing, and predicting, based on thoroughly grounded research and documentation. From your previous coursework of developing an outline, conducting a SWOT/PEST analysis, and developing a budget, you have the basis for compiling a full and complete strategic plan for your chosen organization.

The 6 – 8 page term paper applies the concept of symbolic boundaries to a specific topic. For example, you could explore the construction of boundaries among people who listen to a certain kind of music, or people in a profession, or members of a religion, or people who claim to be from a particular place. Pick a developing country and write a country report in which you present your conclusions backed by the evidence you collected. You will need to analyze your findings. What aspects of the systems of colonialism, neocolonialism, and globalization studied appear to explain the country’s development trajectory, and what aspects of these systems fail to explain it and why. The short length of the paper is an opportunity to strengthen your analytical skills and the ability to synthesize information and develop an argument based on it. For this essay you will examine the political and public health dimensions of your community.

To do this, you will need to examine various outlets like social media and local news outlets for specific examples that show what measures your community or state government implemented to address the public health concerns associated with the pandemic as well as what plan your community or state government implemented to reopen the economy after a few months. You should search through various feeds like Twitter, Instagram, and even Facebook (even though young folks don’t use Facebook much, older people who run municipalities and organizations still do.) Most towns have a small local newspaper that uses social media but also has a website where you can read stories. You should also check larger newspapers like the Hartford Courant or New Haven Register (you may need an account to read more than just a few stories). Be prepared to scour these sources going all the way back to February or March 2020.

BE CAREFUL – base your analysis on reliable sources of information.In collecting data for this module you will be more likely to come across sources that are not based on the scientific data. Remember, states only need to have a rational and reasonable basis to believe there’s a public health risk to opening the economy too early or too quickly. There are lots of social media and news outlets basing their opinions on faulty claims and/or conspiracy theories. This is why it’s important to use reliable sources of information.

As you search through social media and local news, be on the lookout for examples showing what the state or local government did to control the outbreak in that area and what the state or local government did to reopen the economy. This is not a referendum on the policies; it’s just an assessment of what was done and not whether it was a good choice or not.

This module focuses more on the role of the local or state government in limiting the further outbreak of this pandemic. It does not focus on the specific economics of those decisions. That will be addressed in the next module.

   The United Nations (UN) has hired you as a consultant, and your task is to assess the impact that global warming is expected to have on population growth and the ability of societies in the developing world to ensure the adequate security of their food supplies.

   Case Assessment

   As the world’s population nears 10 billion by 2050, the effects of global warming are stripping some natural resources from the environment. As they diminish in number, developing countries will face mounting obstacles to improving the livelihoods of their citizens and stabilizing their access to enough food. The reason these governments are struggling even now is that our climate influences their economic health and the consequent diminishing living standards of their peoples. Climate changes are responsible for the current loss of biodiversity as well as the physical access to some critical farming regions. As such, these changes in global weather patterns diminish agricultural output and the distribution of food to local and international markets. These difficulties will become even more significant for these countries as the Earth’s climate changes for the worse. Temperatures are already increasing incrementally, and polar ice caps are melting, so the salient question is: what does this suggest for developing societies? The issue before the developing world is not its lack of food, but rather how to gain access to food. Simply put, changes in our climate are affecting the global food chain, and hence, the living standards of entire populations. Added to this is the fact that food is not getting to where it is needed in time to prevent hunger or starvation. In many developing countries, shortages are due to governments’ control over distribution networks rather than an insufficient supply of food itself. In effect, these governments are weaponizing food by favoring certain ethnic or religious groups over others. When added to dramatic climate changes that we are experiencing even now, the future for billions of poor people looks increasingly dim.

There is a great deal of mystery surrounding criminal profilers. Until relatively recently, the potential investigative usefulness of criminal profilers, such as their ability to crack cases and help apprehend serial and mass murderers, was not commonly known. In addition, much of what was widely known was garnered from fictional television shows and movies. During the past decade, however, literature has been devoted to examining the role of criminal profilers and how they aid law enforcement in certain cases. Of all the different types of violent and predatory crimes criminal profilers can help with, serial and mass murderer profiling is perhaps the most fascinating. For serial and mass murder cases, criminal profilers use information from crime scenes and empirical research to construct a profile of the murderers. However, criminal profiling has undergone a number of changes in its evolution as a professional field, many of which you consider this week. These changes have had a significant influence on current criminal profiling techniques.

This week, you also become acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of criminal profilers. The most obvious responsibility of a criminal profiler is to develop a profile of a criminal so that law enforcement has a general idea of whom to search for. There are a number of other responsibilities, too, such as providing interviewing strategies during the interrogation of suspects. After reading about the roles and responsibilities of criminal profilers, you might assume that they always create accurate profiles that quickly crack cases. This is not necessarily true. Criminal profiling is part art and part science. Although more and more attempts are being made to steer criminal profiling into a science, there will always be an element of art in criminal profiling. Even the most highly touted criminal profilers are sometimes incorrect in their depictions of perpetrators. Keep in mind that while criminal profilers can be helpful to law enforcement, they are just one resource among many that ultimately lead to the detection and apprehension of serial and mass murderers.

For this assignment, you will write a short (500-750 word) evaluation of a popular source that makes a scientific factual claim by analyzing how the source presents its message, and you will submit a short assignment Cover Letter that explains your process of completing the assignment.

• Select a source making a factual claim. We will discuss and brainstorm some potential sources in class on Wednesday September 8. You have options for finding such a fact, such as:

For example, a cafeteria poster reading “Eat 6-8 servings of veggies a day for a balanced diet” would work as a source, because it makes a claim about specific causes and effects that appeals to objectivity. But one that reads “Eat healthy every day” would not work, because it does not clearly define what “healthy” means, leaving that up to subjective interpretation.

Community Education and Advocacy

Community education and advocacy are both important components of the work that human service professionals do with children and their families. Both types of interventions play important roles in working with this population. For this assignment, you have the opportunity to choose a social issue that impacts children and their families and discuss the influence of both advocacy and community education on the issue that you identify.

Assignment Directions

Please be sure to address all of the following in your assignment:

• Identify a social issue that impacts children and their families, and provide some background about the issue (who is impacted, how many people, and so forth).
  • Some examples of social issues that you could choose include, but are not limited to, child abuse and neglect, teenage pregnancy, and homelessness.
• Analyze two different ways that a human service professional could advocate for the social issue you discussed.

This module focuses on the documentary film Class Dismissed and David Simon’s The Wire.

Focusing first on Class Dismissed, answer the following questions:

Have you watched any of the programs that are examined in Class Dismissed?

• When you watched these programs, did you notice (consciously or perhaps unconsciously) the themes pointed out by the documentary?

Note: Because Class Dismissed was produced in 2005, it looked at programs that had been broadcast up to that date. Remember to keep your focus on the thesis of the documentary and its overview of television history, rather than on the age of the programs that are examined.

Assignment: Outlining a Logic Model

A logic model is a tool that can be used in
planning a program. Using a logic model, social workers can
systematically analyze a proposed new program and how the various
elements involved in a program relate to each other. At the program
level, social workers consider the range of problems and needs that
members of a particular population present. Furthermore, at the program
level, the logic model establishes the connection between the resources
needed for the program, the planned interventions, the anticipated
outcomes, and ways of measuring success. The logic model provides a
clear picture of the program for all stakeholders involved.

To
prepare for this Assignment, review the case study of the Petrakis
family, located in this week’s resources. Conduct research to locate
information on an evidence-based program for caregivers like Helen
Petrakis that will help you understand her needs as someone who is a
caregiver for multiple generations of her family. You can use the NREPP
registry. Use this information to generate two logic models for a
support group that might help Helen manage her stress and anxiety.

First,
consider the practice level. Focus on Helen’s needs and interventions
that would address those needs and lead to improved outcomes. Then
consider the support group on a new program level. Think about the
resources that would be required to implement such a program (inputs)
and about how you can measure the outcomes.
