Week 5 Discussion Guidelines

1. Minimum number of posts required this week is 7 –  (marks will be deducted if you post fewer).
2. To keep the signal to noise ratio down, all posts must add to the meaning of the discussion and not just be a conversation.
3. Answers must be written concisely; marks will be deducted if you “write a lot, but say nothing”.
4. A quiz does not count as a post.

You must post an original response to each of the following questions in the Discussion Forum for this week in the appropriate “thread”. Posts in the wrong “thread” will not be marked.

By Saturday midnight (AEST)

You should submit at least one reply to the postings of at least one other of your classmates for questions 1, 2 and two for question 3. Each post must add value to the discussion. Please remember that your contribution to each week’s discussion forum is an important item of assessment in the professionalism subject.

Question 1

As a software developer, you are required to develop programs that can be readily accessed by a wide range of clients.

Discuss ways in which you can design your software and applications for 2 of the following:

• Blind or visually impaired clients
• Clients with limited or poor hand coordination
• Learning programs for children recovering from trauma
• Clients who are colour blind
• Clients who are hearing impaired

We have been looking at concepts of Green ICT this week.

Discuss 3 ways in which you (or your organisation), can use ICT to reduce your carbon footprint, and contribute to Green ICT.

Question 3

Which of the following are projects, and which are processes? Explain your answer

1. Building a computer, on a production line of identical computers
2. Building a house, as one of a series of identical houses all over Australia
3. Upgrading a computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10
4. Upgrading all 120 computers from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Please refer to the attached file. Please do include a proper Linear Programming model in part B. I have no idea on how to go about answering the question and help is urgently needed. Answers to be in word document.

1a) Axel, a business executive, proposed two alternatives to NewCrest. One is investing
$100,000 in option I, $200,000 in II and $150,000 in III. The other is investing
$60,000 in option I, $100,000 in II and $125,000 in III. NewCrest takes a
conservative approach to decision-making. That is, it chooses the alternative that
maximizes the minimum return produced by the two outcomes of the economic
outlook. Discuss among the two alternatives proposed by Axel, which one NewCrest
will choose. Please write clearly alternatives, states of nature and payoffs in a payoff
table. Please limit the answer to within one page.

1b) Ben, another business executive, pointed out that NewCrest has an unlimited number
of alternatives, not just the two proposed by Axel. Which alternative is best if
NewCrest takes a conservative approach to decision-making? To answer that
question, Ben drafted,
“Define investment in option I,
investment in option II, and
investment in option III.
The objective is to
Maximize min ”.
The objective function is not linear. Please search online “tricks to maximize the min
of objective functions” or “transformations into linear programs”. Then help Ben
develop a complete Linear Programming (LP) model that represents the problem of
deciding how much to invest in each option. Please limit the answer to within one
page.

1c) Use the Excel Solver to find the optimal solution to the problem in Part (b) and
summarise how NewCrest should invest. Please paste here three screenshots, (1) the
problem worksheet just before clicking the Solver command, (2) the Solver
Parameters dialog just before clicking Solve and (3) the Answer Report created by the
Solver. Please limit the answer to within three pages.
