Editorial thinking is creating a bridge, which connects the designed work and the data sets. The process of operating the editorial thinking is based on three perspectives: focus, angle, and framing techniques used in presenting the data. This data presentation process is determined by the sufficiency and relevance of the data collected (Aparicio & Costa, 2015). The data used in the editorial thinking is applied as the visualization process to tell stories by curating data into different forms that make the audience understand the formation of data in highlighting the trends, patterns, and outliers.
The key concept of the data visualization elaborated by Kirk (2015) is the graphical representation of data and information using the visualization elements such as charts, data visualization tools, maps, and graphs. This visual representation provides a wider and better way of understanding to the audience by creating understandable gridlines of data, outliers, and data patterns. The techniques used for creating annotations, charts , colors, diagrams, and images that pass an important message to the audience are considered an effective method of communicating concrete ideas and abstractions that are readable and understandable to the human being.
The main concept elaborated on in the video is the use of patterns, where he said, “the idea behind the use of patterns is interacting with numbers more than quantities.” The plot of the graph is scattered and contains different annotation, with different colors that increase the readability of the presented data. The patterns used in the representation process from the video reveal the data of arc diagrams of a country, area graph, dot map, and choropleth maps. The patterns are used to create a data exploration representing the dataset’s outlier detection (Kirk, 2015). The choice of the annotation color or symbol in a presentation chart, graph, or image should be recognizable in defining different color shapes and sizes combinations.

The author described editorial thinking as the process whereby data analyst connects the data work with the design work. Visualizing data is the most relevant process that enables data analysts to present complex graphics, pictorials, and films. Data analysts need to process large and complex data in such a way that it can be used by non-IT or illiterate staff to make informed decisions that can impact business operations appropriately. Editorial thinking is based on the three perspectives, including focus, framing, and angle (Kirk, 2016). Every individual may be needed to analyze and comprehend data for effective decision-making. Therefore, editorial thinking enables every individual to frame certain complex information effectively to generate solutions to the existing problems.
The presented video discussed four main stages of the visualization workflow. The concept that I learned and became more interesting is formulating your brief. Formulating your brief refers to the process whereby an individual obtains information and criticizes the main points that can be used to generate final results. According to Kirk (2016), the simplest method of capturing all the details from the data source is formulating your brief. The significance of formulating your brief is that it enables both stakeholders and clients to effectively communicate and share relevant ideas about achieving the organizational objectives. It also provides clear information to all the clients about how an organization operates and how it offers its products and services. The most effective methodology of formulating your brief is through the use of charts and graphs. Using graphs and charts enables data analysts to determine the variables. Tedtalk can formulate your brief by presenting statistical data to the target group (Brigham, 2016). The audience can have a golden opportunity to present the statistical data with a high level of confidence.
