Something that is really important that I have learned is that the counselor or therapist is not always the expert but the client is in some cases. This is something I did not think of before. My identity as a counselor has completely changed because now I feel more prepared and excited to start my counseling journey.     Michaela is a 40-year-old single woman who worked as a nurse. Michaela describes herself as a bi-racial, Latina and White bisexual woman. She sought treatment from you because of her deteriorating relationship with Laura, an unemployed alcoholic woman who was prone to abusive outbursts. Michaela knew she had to end her relationship with Laura but felt guilty about leaving her. Michaela was filled with feelings of “hopelessness about my future.” Michaela wanted to marry and have children but she worried that she was losing “precious time.” She often felt that it was her fate to be “alone but I don’t know why!”. Michaela stated, “I often pick the wrong women and ruin my chances with those who care about me.”

    Prior to meeting Laura, Michaela had many romantic relationships that did not work out. Either she was attracted to women who were exciting, energetic, and successful but unreliable and unavailable for commitment or she broke it off with women who were stable and wanted to marry her because she found them “boring.” More recently she wondered if she was being too “hard on them. “There was one woman in particular whom she thought she loved, but she “pushed her away.” She recently learned that this woman married one of her old friends and felt a tremendous sense of loss and regret. When she met Laura, she seemed fun-loving and adventurous. Michaela soon realized, however, that Laura had a problem with drinking. Although Laura was verbally abusive to her at times, she was always apologetic and filled with remorse. Michaela felt that Laura “needed her” and she had trouble ending the relationship.

    You learn that Michaela was unhappy as a child. There was a great deal of marital

    discord in her household. Michaela’s mother was needed and depressed and drank excessively. Michaela describes her father as “a dynamic and successful businessman” who traveled frequently and engaged in several extramarital affairs. Michaela admired her father and sought his approval despite his unavailability and what seems to be frequent rejection of her. She experienced her mother as a “burden” and felt that she had to “really be the parent instead of her.”

    Michaela’s behavior in treatment seems to change and was confusing. At times she calls you a “fantastic find” whom she is eager to please and is often overly apologetic when she is late or cancels a session. On other occasions, she accuses you of being “weak, incompetent, and insensitive.” A third perception is that Michaela seems to think that you “need her” because you “seem quite lonely.” Please reflect on the following aspects of Michaela’s case.     Continuity and discontinuity of behavioral inhibition and exuberance: psychophysiological and behavioral influences across the first four years of life.

    Four-month-old infants were screened (N = 433) for temperamental patterns thought to predict behavioral inhibition, including motor reactivity and the expression of negative affect. Those selected (N = 153) were assessed at multiple age points across the first 4 years of life for behavioral signs of inhibition as well as psychophysiological markers of frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry. Four-month temperament was modestly predictive of behavioral inhibition over the first 2 years of life and of behavioral reticence at age 4. Those infants who remained continuously inhibited displayed right frontal EEG asymmetry as early as 9 months of age while those who changed from inhibited to noninhibited did not. Change in behavioral inhibition was related to experience of nonparental care. A second group of infants, selected at 4 months of age for patterns of behavior thought to predict temperamental exuberance, displayed a high degree of continuity over time in these behaviors.

    Step 1: Creating a Profile

    1. Go to the following website: https://cronometer.com/ IMPORTANT: Instructions below apply to the web-based Cronometer application. Do NOT use the mobile device App.

    2. Click on Sign Up for Free in the middle of the screen.

    Create your profile by entering your school email and password (8 characters).

    Next, enter your sex, birth date, height, and weight. For females, leave as normal unless you are pregnant or lactating, which can be selected from the drop down menu.

    Click the check box to agree to Terms of Service and click Create Account at the bottom of the screen.

    3. Once you have entered the Cronometer site, click on SETTINGS at the top of the screen. Once you open SETTINGS, you will see a drop down for PROFILE. It is here you will see your ACTIVITY LEVEL. Also, the email settings are in the SETTINGS then ACCOUNT tab.

    Under email, be sure to uncheck any checked boxes. Leaving these boxes checked results in promotional emails from Cronometer. Cronometer is not endorsed by UMGC, and we do not support any fad diet information that may be sent to you.

    Step 2: Using the Food Database

    1. To begin entering your foods for Day 1, ensure you are under the Diary tab at the top of the screen.

    2. Select the appropriate calendar date. It is highly recommended that you enter all three food diaries at once, using consecutive days on the Cronometer calendar (even if your log days were not consecutive), and use dates closest to today’s actual date. Because we are using the free version of the site, reports can only be done for the last 7 days so you will be unable to get a report for the days you enter if they are more than 7 days away. It’s not a problem to edit the dates in this way–it will not impact your results.

    3. Click on Add Food at the top of the screen. Type the first food from your food log into the search bar and click Search. Select the food item that best matches the food you ate in the Search Results.

    4. Choose the amount that you consumed at the bottom of the search box. Use the drop menu to select the most appropriate serving measurement and enter the number of servings. If less than 1 serving, use a decimal to indicate the percentage of one serving consumed. Click on Add Serving.

    Note: Do not include any supplements into your food diary as you are doing an assessment of your dietary intake only.

    5. If you need to delete a food item from your diary, simply right click on the food item and select Delete Selected Items.

    6. Continue Steps 1-3 for all food items for your Day 1 Food Diary.

    7. After you have entered all food and drink items for the first day, click on the gear found at the top right of the screen. Select “Mark Day Complete”.

    8. Repeat for Days 2 and 3 by changing the date in the calendar. Again, ensure dates are consecutive in the Cronometer calendar; are within a 7-day window; and are as close to today’s date as possible.

    Step 3: Obtaining Your Nutrition Report

    1. Once you have entered all of your foods into the Diary for all three days and marked all three days as complete, you need to create your nutrition report to analyze your average intake of nutrients over the three days. Click on the Trends tab at the top of the screen. Select Nutrition Report.

    2. At the top, select the parameters for your search [see screenshot below]. Ensure your 3 days are included in the last 7 days as the free version of this site only allows for averages from the last 7 days.

    Disruptive Dysregulation Disorder is a common condition that causes children and adolescents to be persistent, irritable, angry, and to have frequent, intense temper outbursts. Major Depression is characterized by experiencing five of more symptoms of: feelings of hopelessness or sadness, decreased interest in activities, significant weight loss/appetite increase or decrease, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, psychomotor agitation, diminished ability to concentrate, and recurring thoughts of death. Persistent Depressive Disorder( Dysthymia) is a chronic major depressive disorder that is present for most days over a period of two years. The symptoms are the same as major depression disorder.
    Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a serious health issue that is similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Prior to the week or two before your period, PMDD causes severe irritability, depression, or anxiety. Symptoms typically disappear two to three days after your period begins. Substance/Medication-Induced Depressive Disorder is distinguished by a prominent and persistent change in mood, exhibiting clear signs of depression or a marked decrease in interest or pleasure in daily activities and hobbies, and these symptoms begin during or shortly after the use of a specific substance/medication (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

    Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by periods of extreme mood disturbances that affect mood, thoughts, and behavior. Bipolar disorders are classified into two types. Bipolar I disorder is characterized by episodes of mania, hypomania, and major depressive episodes. Mania episodes are distinguished by a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood that lasts at least one week. Individuals may experience inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, more talking than usual, racing thoughts, an increase in goal-directed activity, and excessive involvement in activities with a high potential for painful consequences during this period. Hypomania episodes are characterized by having a higher energy level than individuals with mania, these symptoms will be the same. Finally, major depressive episodes are the same as major depression disorder. Major depressive episode is characterized by a two-week or longer period during which a person experiences the following major depression symptoms: sadness and hopelessness, fatigue, weight gain or loss, changes in sleeping habits, loss of interest in activities, or suicidal idealization. Bipolar II disorder is a milder form of mood elevation, characterized by milder episodes of hypomania interspersed with periods of severe depression. A person suffering from mania will exhibit manic symptoms but will be able to carry on with daily responsibilities, and may even see an improvement in job performance or other goal-directed activity. The elevated mood, on the other hand, is not severe enough to necessitate hospitalization or cause significant disruption at home or work (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

    Bipolar disorder is easily confused with depression because it can include depressive episodes. These disorders are similar because the symptoms are common between each form of depression and the two types of bipolar disorder. For example, the similarity to depression and bipolar disorder both leads to the individual mood being altered which can affect their daily lives on how to operate throughout the day, which leads to them either being emotional or not able to operate as they normally do. Overall, in order for clinicians to not misdiagnosis individuals with depression or bipolar disorder they have to fully understand the different symptoms and episodes that occur in clients.

    Reflect on what you have learned about yourself, the group process, and others throughout the semester of experiences in CSP 672. This is an opportunity for you to process your own group experience from the perspectives of a group member, leader, and co-leader.     1.Self reflection

    a. What did you learn about yourself as a group leader? Must include the following points:

  1. Focus on personal qualities, beliefs, and attitudes that may enhance or detract from your effectiveness as a group leader

    (My own comments: For the first question, I always used to only be a group member and I really never was a group leader before. I was to shy to actually lead a group so I always held back. I learned about myself that I actually have the courage to be a group leader. Being in the intensive group I learned that once you are engaged with the others and they trust you the process becomes more natural and easier. One thing that was hard for me as a leader is I did not want to overshare information but I also wanted to build trust between me and others so I need to find balance between that. I learned as a group member that I feel less lonely when others share their experiences whether it is similar or different. I learned that I feel empowered by others. A personal goal I achieved is to not hold back and share personal information with others. At the beginning I was more skeptic of sharing information. I learned how to become vulnerable as a group member. Something else that I have learned is that I became a better listener. One thing in a larger group that I have experienced was that sometimes everyone would wait for the other person to share and there was a couple quite minutes. Or the opposite would happen where someone would overshare and others did not get a chance. My strongest skill as a group leader is active listening and paying attention to detail and remembering and paying attention to each members story. Something I need to improve is my self esteem and self doubt in being a leader. I need to stop holding back and focus on my goals.

    2. Group process reflection

    a. What did you learn about the group processes that will help you run groups more efficiently in the future? Ensure to include the following:

    * describe how your small group (in the lab) functioned and what you have learned about how groups function and malfunction.

    * Describe the evolution of your lab group in terms of stages of development and specific group processes (e.g., level of trust established, the impact of working with co-leaders, conflict and/or resistance, cohesion)

    c. What factors in the group prevented your group from moving forward or process deeper.

    (My own comments: Something I learned is to that not everything works out perfectly from the first time and to have patience. It is important to trust the process because the members and leaders need to get to know each other and build trust first. Another thing I learned is that it is important to not overtalk someone and to go one by one so everyone gets a chance to share. In our small group all the members were participating and active. Our group leader in the first session was very clear and made it go more smoothly since I did not know many of the other group members we introduced ourselves first. I learned how comforting words can be and how language can make participants more comfortable. At the beginning the members shared a little about themselves the topics evolved in the second round and third and people started to become more talkative and sharing. I think working with co leaders made the process easier. It felt less pressuring. In the last round I noticed cohesion because the members started getting more emotional other group members were supportive. There was not any type of conflict or resistance in the group we had. But as a leader I learned that if there is any type of conflict or resistance to take it slow and focus on the details. It is important to listen and not to argue with a member to be able to focus on a solution. It is not always the best to be in the “expert” role. I think that limited time might have prevented my group from moving forward. I think universality would describe my groups personality because we shared the similar experiences which helped us see what others are going through and not feel that we are alone. I think that a lot of members wanted to share more but we wanted to respect each other and give each other space to share.

    3. Leadership reflection

    a. What do you think was your strengths and weaknesses in leading the group (talk about skills, personal qualities, etc)?

    b. What are your plans in improving identified weaknesses/skills?

    c. How was your experience as a leader/co-leader different from your experience as a member participant?

    (My strengths are that I am culturally competent. I am a good listener, I keep eye contact, I pay attention to detail, I am patient, I am committed. I have empathy and cultural humility. (I think one of the discussions discussed that topic you can get more ideas from there). Weakness would be that I am a little insecure in leading bigger groups. Another thing would be facing criticism. I would have a hard time receiving negative comments.

    My plans to improve it is to practice with a group of friends or family. I would also have to improve building my self-esteem not doubting myself and facing criticism without becoming hopeless. (here you can find ways to help it). Differences between being a leader would be that you get to hear others. It is definitely harder because you want to give feedback that does benefits them and does not hurt them in any way. It feels like a bigger responsibility. However, it is a great experience and feeling to be able to hear others, help them and engage with them. The best feeling in the counseling profession is have the trust of others and them sharing their stories with you. As a member it is a little bit more laid back however sometimes it arises feelings of anxiety sharing personal information with a bigger group. However, getting feedback as a member and feeling supported makes the process feel better. It is also good to hear other people share so we do not feel lonely or alone in our journey. In both positions as a leader and member it is amazing how people develop from the first round until the last. In both positions I got to build a stronger relationship with the others session after session.

    Test ethics cover both the creation and use of tests. For this Discussion, you concentrate on the implications of test misuse. These can relate to test use with diverse groups, licensure issues, adverse impact, or test security, to name a few.

    Some important basic ethical principles regarding testing are as follows:

    • The construction of tests needs to be done using appropriate psychometric procedures, so that the test will provide valid measurement.
    • When tests are used, they need to be properly selected. The test should be valid for the purpose used and should not be outdated. The selection should take into account the purpose of the testing and should also take the examinee’s language, culture, and disabilities into account.
    • The test needs to be administered according to proper protocol in order to maintain standardization.
    • The test needs to be interpreted and reported fairly, and the report needs to be stored properly. The responsible psychology professional should prevent misinterpretation and should prevent reporting that results in incorrect decisions or that causes the client unnecessary emotional harm. He or she should also protect the client’s confidentiality.
    • Test givers must maintain the security of test materials. Many tests, such as the Wechsler intelligence tests or the MMPI, have been developed over a period of decades. Public familiarity with these tests would destroy their usefulness. Test publishers generally have standards controlling who can buy and use their tests.
    • A test has an “adverse impact” when it results in substantially different employment decisions (e.g., hiring, promotion, termination) for one group vs. another group. This adverse impact is unlawful if there is no justification for it. For instance, some jobs might have tests of physical strength that result in fewer women being hired. The employer would need to demonstrate that physical strength is a legitimate job requirement.

    To prepare for this Discussion, think of potential negative effects of tests not being administered, stored, or interpreted according to ethical principles. Consider the effects on both the individuals being tested and, potentially, the population at large.

    With these thoughts in mind:

    How Do I Know If A Source Is Credible?

    Who is the author? Credible sources are written by authors respected in their fields of study. Responsible, credible authors will cite their sources so that you can check the accuracy of and support for what they’ve written. (This is also a good way to find more sources for your own research.)

    How recent is the source? The choice to seek recent sources depends on your topic. While sources on the American Civil War may be decades old and still contain accurate information, sources on information technologies, or other areas that are experiencing rapid changes, need to be much more current.

    What is the author’s purpose? When deciding which sources to use, you should take the purpose or point of view of the author into consideration. Is the author presenting a neutral, objective view of a topic? Or is the author advocating one specific view of a topic? Who is funding the research or writing of this source? A source written from a particular point of view may be credible; however, you need to be careful that your sources don’t limit your coverage of a topic to one side of a debate.

    What type of sources does your audience value? If you are writing for a professional or academic audience, they may value peer-reviewed journals as the most credible sources of information. If you are writing for a group of residents in your hometown, they might be more comfortable with mainstream sources, such as Time or Newsweek. A younger audience may be more accepting of information found on the Internet than an older audience might be.

    Be especially careful when evaluating Internet sources! Never use Web sites where an author cannot be determined, unless the site is associated with a reputable institution such as a respected university, a credible media outlet, government program or department, or well-known non-governmental organizations. Beware of using sites like Wikipedia, which are collaboratively developed by users. Because anyone can add or change content, the validity of information on such sites may not meet the standards for academic research.

    Big idea: How will the Covid-19 pandemic affect human development?

    The Covid-19 pandemic will continue to affect many aspects of our lives for years to come. The purpose of this paper is to pick one area and look at it from a developmental psychology point of view.

    You will need to use concepts and theories we have been covering this semester. I understand we are only beginning to see research as we are still dealing with the pandemic itself. That said, you will be looking at what information you can find now, what is being speculated, and then using your own terrific thinking and what we have been covering, talk about what you see as developmental implications for one of the topics below. Pick something that interests you- it will make the project far more interesting. If there is something not on this list that you would like to write about, check with me.

    What resources can you use to complete this assignment?

    Use our textbook and any readings/resources in the content area of our class.

    Use articles that come from reliable sources- peer-reviewed journals, web sources that are based on research and/or input from experts in the field, and you may also use newspaper and magazine articles. Just make it clear what is “academic.”

    You may choose to interview someone. This can allow you to gain insights from that person to use in your paper, quoting them, etc. For example, the experience of being quarantined has been very different for families with children, young single adults, elderly people living alone and so forth.

    Remember, while you are sharing your opinion, you are grounding this in science, theories and psychological concepts.

    How should you structure your paper?

    1. Formulate a thesis statement about what you want to focus on, critically analyze, and write about. Your introduction should include your topic and an overview of what the paper will cover

    2. Use headings as they will help organize the flow of your work

    3. The paper will need a summary and conclusion section at the end and include any unanswered questions you have. We do not have all the answers yet, but this assignment will help you learn to engage in educated, informed, speculation.

    4. Use APA format- this means Times New Roman 12 pt font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins (no, I don’t measure, but I can tell if you have super wide margins). Be sure your citations and references are in APA format. Be sure you have both a title page and a reference page

    5. Please take care with writing mechanics. Poor grammar, run-on sentences, sentence fragments and spelling errors all will cost you points. If this is an are of concern for you, please remember, MC Writing Centers are open and doing virtual appointments.

    How long should this paper be?

    Papers will be graded on quality of work, not quantity of words/pages. That said, I would expect quality work to be at least 5 pages. Remember: title page and reference page are not part of the page count.

    This is a chance to show some mastery of what you gleaned in the course and an opportunity to reflect on a difficult time in our individual and collective lives. By writing, we can come to think more clearly and know what we know and feel what we feel.

    Other questions you might have

    Can I write this based on my own experience? Yes, you may but this is not a requirement. Some of you may feel comfortable doing this and others may not. Some of you may be more interested in an aspect of the pandemic that has not affected you directly.

We follow the rules of our society (both legally enforceable ones as well as those that are just informally polite), sometimes with little awareness of why we do what we do. Last week, you had your second assignment due in which you broke these rules, or the norms of our society. I always have fun reading these norm-breaking assignments, so today I want you and your group to reflect on both chapter six and chapter seven to better understand your thoughts and feelings about your norm violation. Yup, this is an easy discussion, because you’ve already done this assignment! In essence, give a summarized version of your break-a-norm assignment to your fellow group members! See who was the most creative in your group! Summarize what norm you broke and how it made you feel.

    Here is where the discussion version differs, though: Using the concepts you learned in chapters six and seven, talk about at least TWO key social psychological principles that influenced your behavior (one principle has to come from chapter 6 and the other has to come from chapter 7): norms, role-playing, conformity / nonconformity, normative social influence, cognitive dissonance, self-monitoring, etc. (the list goes on, but make sure you talk about at least TWO things in your initial comment!)     2. Then, identify a variable that you think would make another person more or less likely to conform.
