policy community in the United States. If the American war in Vietnam is any indication, now
will commence a yearslong “blame game”: an attempt by foreign policy experts, journalists,
and historians to understand what went wrong in Afghanistan and why, and who (if anyone),
is responsible. In your view, what went wrong in Afghanistan? What will be the consequences

Writing Suggestions

Although this is not an English class, make sure to use the proper word choice, punctuation,
and spelling. The more professional your paper looks and reads, the better. Also, since this

is an argumentative essay where you will be defending a specific claim, please make sure to
be clear and direct on where you stand with the argument. Somewhere in your introductory
paragraph, you should clearly state your thesis, and you should clearly outline how you aim
to defend it. Then in the rest of the paper, you should go on to defend your argument. It is OK
for you to use personal pronouns. That is, you can say, “In this paper, I will defend, X, Y, or
Z.” In fact, I strongly encourage this because it will help improve the clarity of your argument.

In addition, your paper should have a clearly discernible introduction, body, and conclusion.
You are not required to use section headings, but this can improve the clarity of your writing.
In the introduction, you need to briefly outline your thesis, in the body of the essay, you need
to defend your argument, and in the conclusion you need to briefly restate your thesis. This
will ensure that your central point sticks with your reader. Finally, you should make sure to
acknowledge potential counterarguments. I would be more than happy to take a look at an
outline as long as you set up an appointment to meet with me to discuss it in person.

Grading Standards

Your paper will be graded on the basis of how well it is written and argued. Since everyone
disagrees, you do not need to convince me, personally, that your argument is right. However,
you need to build a convincing case, which means that you need to clearly set forth reasons
for why your view should be accepted, you need to consider possible counterarguments, and

Arguably, there are six major political themes that mobilize the attention and passion of the American citizens today: strengthening the democratic process, economic inequality, health care, climate change, immigration and gun regulation. Present your position on four (4) of these issues by using the political wisdom of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Marx, Mill, Virginia Held, Nietzsche and Foucault. In your essay, you have to use at least four (4) of them. For the construction of each argument, you should use all of the thinkers you have selected, since some of them may represent a counterargument to your personal assessments. Basically, you have to define your own views first and then check each of them against the four thinkers of your choice. Who would support your view and why? Who would disagree with you and why?

I am not interested in an exhaustive discussion of the policy matter, but on the manner that you are able to articulate a subjective vantagepoint (or objectivize a personal view) by appealing to theoretical constructs.

One way to do it is to start by defining for yourself what motivates your support or opposition to some particular aspect circumscribed by the issues stated above (e.g., taxation of the rich, reestablishing a federal legal framework against racial discrimination, building, the border wall, stopping immigration altogether, allowing only an annual quota of immigrants, Medicare for all, the public option for health insurance, the carbon tax, starting immediately a program of eliminating fossil fuels and replacing them with renewable energy sources, universal background check when buying guns, banning the sale of assault rifles, and so on). Then, you construct your arguments around that particular aspect by using the ideas of the thinkers whom I indicated above.

Another way to do it is to justify the policy preference relative to the topic (strengthening the democratic process, economic inequality, immigration, health care, climate change, immigration). Then, you speculate on whether the four thinkers support or reject your policy preference.

You may wonder: how could some of these people be relevant to our contemporary debates? Yes, the relevance may be hard to find on certain topics such as ‘climate change’ or ‘immigration’ due to the particularities of the age we are living in. Even ‘freedom,’ ‘property,’ ‘gun control’ and ‘health care’ have been understood quite differently during their lifetimes. Nevertheless, though it may be difficult to speculate on these issues, this is actually the point (remember our discussion on hermeneutics of context). Let me just bring to the forefront something that is familiar to you. The political design that we use today has been crafted by people who studied Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau and many, many others. None of these thinkers’ ideas addressed the specific reality of the 1770s and beyond. However, they provided a wealth of wisdom and an intellectual platform for the creation of a new political society. It allowed the Founding Fathers not only to speculate on how would these thinkers deal with one problem or another, but also to justify their own choices by appealing to their wisdom. When Woodrow Wilson created the League of Nations after the First World War and Franklin Delano Roosevelt sketched in the last years of the Second World War the institutions of international cooperation that we have today (United Nations, International Monetary Fund, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) they were both intellectually informed by Kant’s Perpetual Peace.

Research Proposal: The Right to Remain Silent in the Age of Smartphones

The Fifth Amendment to the US constitution provides several rights to suspects. One of the most important provisions of this Amendment is protection against self-incrimination (Maclin, 2017). Self-incrimination entails exposing oneself to prosecution through speech or actions (Deskus, 2018; Sharf et al., 2017). It is from this protection that the right to remain silent during a law enforcement investigation processes such as interrogation is extended to all persons involved. Therefore, under the Fifth Amendment of the US constitution, individuals cannot be compelled to give testimony that may in one way or another incriminate them.

Whereas the constitutional rights of a suspect are clearly stipulated, this rights have failed to keep up with technological advancement. The advent of smartphones is one of the most significant development. Any suspect in possession of smartphone could have incriminating evidence (Royer and Yperman, 2020; Carnes, 2020). According to Lemus (2017), law enforcement officers are mandated to search a suspect and confiscate any item that may help with investigation. Lasagni (2018) observes that under special circumstances, law enforcement officers can search the person and the environment of a suspect without warranty and this means that important information may be obtained and remain admissible in a court. Therefore, a suspect that properly understands and invokes their right to remain silent may still give critical information through their phones, highlighting an important loophole in criminal investigation.

In this research proposal, the main goal is to review the application of the Fifth Amendment in the wake of technological advancement with special focus on a suspect’s right to remain silent during an investigation in which their smartphone has been confiscated. It will be argued that during an interrogation with law enforcers, the right to remain silent should be extended to smartphones. This is because these gadgets hold as much information if not more than an individual may hold in their memory (Newell & Koops, 2020). Until a person acquires legal representation or waives their right to remain silent, their smartphones may not be used as a source of information pertaining to the ongoing investigation. Invoking one’s right to remain silent would be useless when the information they protect to prevent self-incrimination can be obtained from their personal gadgets.

I really like your thesis! I think it has a lot of potential to form the backbone of a great essay.

However, you do not provide strong evidence to support your thesis. Your body paragraphs rely on vague generalizations without providing specific evidence to support your claims. You overclaim in two ways: (1) you use absolute language/technical language where it does not belong, and (2) you make claims that you are not well-qualified to provide evidence on the basis of what you’ve learned in this course.

To be successful, you will need to rewrite most paragraphs after your introduction. However, it is still very possible to develop good body paragraphs. Stop trying to make sweeping claims about African literature. Instead, ask yourself how the stories you read in this course support your claim:

  • How did Ngugi give voice to underrepresented voices in A Grain of Wheat? This is a great case, because we have hard evidence that the British tried to sweep the kind of atrocities Ngugi describes under the rug. His novel therefore especially helps overcome biased representations of history.
  • Another biased representation of history is that Africans were uncivilized before European intervention. We learned about pre-colonial governance structures in Head’s “Kgotla” short story. Did these governance structures seem uncivilized to you?
  • Yet another biased representation of history is that missions represented a strictly positive or civilizing force. We see the action of missionaries in Adichie’s “The Headstrong Historian” — did it seem like they were a strictly positive force in Igbo society?

You are well-qualified to make arguments on the basis of stories you read in the course, so draw your arguments and evidence from there.

Purpose

Most people rarely, if ever, call their Representative in Congress to express their views and opinions. It can seem intimidating at first but with a little practice you can effectively and frequently communicate with them.

Tasks

  1. Find out who your Representative in Congress is by clicking here and using the search function in the upper right hand corner (Links to an external site.)
  2. Once you’ve found your Rep. head over to their official website. Click the link below their picture on the house.gov search results. It will be: their name.house.gov For example, my Rep is Julia Brownley so her official site is juliabrownley.house.gov.
  3. Peruse their site to learn more about them. What issues are they focused on? What are their priorities?
  4. Check out their social media pages to see what statements they’ve made recently. This is a good way to get ideas for the topic of your call.
  5. Choose an issue you want call your Reps’ office about. It can be anything you want just as long as it’s an issue your Rep. has some influence over. For example, a second COVID stimulus bill or national vote by mail for the election in November are great topics. A city parking issue is not because your Rep. can’t really do anything about that.
  6. Once you have a topic write a call script to use when you make the call
    1. Include your name and address to let the person who answers the phone know you’re a constitutent
    2. A brief description of the issue and your opinion about it
    3. An ‘ask’ for the Rep. to do. Post on social media about the topic, make a public statement, vote yes or no on a particular bill
    4. This script should be no more than 200 words
  7. Call your Rep! The phone number for their local and DC offices can be found on their official websites.
  8. After your call write a brief ‘Report Back’ on how the call went. This doesn’t need to be too formal. Just a brief summary of how the call went and your feelings about how well you did and what the response from the person you spoke with was (were they nice, attentive, did they have more information to share?)
    1. This report back should be no more than 150 words.
  9. Submit both your call script and report back

Criteria for Success

  • Call script contains:
    • Proof that you are a constituent of the Representative – your name and address
    • A clearly worded description of a topic your Representative can do something about
    • Your take on the topic
    • A simple ask your Representative can do to show they listened and that is easy for you to check up on (e.g. an Instagram or Twitter post
  • Report Back contains:
    • Brief summary of how the call went
    • Reflection on your feelings about the call

To start, visit Comparative Agendas Project . Once on the webpage, select Trend Tools (on the top right). Then, select dataset types and policy topics on the upper left side.
