Abigail Healthcare Diabetes Clinic Intervention Program
Abigail Healthcare Diabetes clinic, which is located in Texas, Galveston County has a nutrient and weight loss intervention plan or program that focuses on those who are obese (BMI over 30) and are clinically diagnosed with diabetes or they are prediabetic. This program focuses on creating a meal plan (dieting) and exercise regime along with medication education and treatment to change the individual’s health behavioral lifestyle. This program has a 100% efficacy rate with all the patients who were placed on this program have lost weight and had their A1c levels reduced within three months.
Recommendation for Adaption
In regard to the discussion topic, a recommendation I would make for adapting this program to a different population is making it optional and available to those who are not diabetic but clearly are approaching a BMI of 30 or make it available for those who were only diagnosed with hypertension and not only diabetes. This is because diabetes has many catalysts, such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking, drinking, bad eating habits that increase the risk of diabetes. Therefore, if we can tackle these individuals who have these unhealthy lifestyles and have these pre-existing underlying medical conditions, then we could revert many of their health issues and prevent diabetes and other comorbidities.
Cultural Competencies
Culture is one of the main factors in the prevalence and incidence rate of hypertension and diabetes within this county because of the heavily influenced Hispanic and African American food culture, especially being that the county is right next door to New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mexico. Galveston county population’s culture consists of a southern diet called soul food, which contains high fat, sugar, oil, butter, and red meat, etc. According to Shikany et al., (2015), the southern dieting pattern has a high correlation with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, therefore, this unhealthy dieting causes high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other comorbidities (Shikany et al., 2015). Therefore, showing understanding that the way they cook and eat is part of their culture and that we are not judging them. Also, they do not have to completely stop their cultural habits, we can start by introducing healthier options (exercising, fruits, vegetables, and less sugar, salt, oil, and fat) and slowly reduce unhealthy ingredients or methods regarding their cooking and consumption.
