M6D1: Exploring the Levels of Prevention

Help me study for my Health & Medical class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

Module 6

This week, we’ll begin the discussions by exploring prevention across the health care delivery system. Together, we represent current and future nursing, public health, and allied health professionals. Let’s think about what this means for national prevention initiatives.

Remember that an active discussion is key to an engaging discussion. Be sure to read what others have written and add substantively to the discussion. Avoid mini-papers. Time goes fast so start right away!

Select ONE of the following short IEHP videos that is of interest to you about preventive care.

The first question is based on your chosen video and what you have learned so far this term to enable you to begin discussions immediately.

1. Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) is a California-based health plan that is aiming to increase members’ understanding and utilization of preventive health services. These videos are a part of that effort. Thinking about what you have learned so far, to what extent does your perception of prevention and what you have learned to date in this course align with how prevention is presented in the video?

Now let’s apply the readings to analyze this organization together as a group. Put yourself in the role of a professional working in your career focus of public health, allied health, or nursing.

Upon your review all of the module resources covering the methods, models, and approaches of prevention, along with the inter-relationships with disease management, it is now time to apply what has been learned.

2. What levels of prevention are predominant in your chosen video? Is one level more dominant than the others? Please share concrete examples to illustrate your point.
3. How effective do you think this method of outreach is at engaging patients/consumers in preventive care? How about at managing chronic illness?
4. Together, let’s identify other methods or models that this organization – and other health organizations – can use to promote prevention at all three levels. What would such a model or method look like? As you discuss, consider how proposed methods/models can contribute to increased quality of care. Please share examples, particularly through the lens of your own discipline or degree program.
