PDA and essay . An Englishwoman’s account of being captured by Indians during King Philip’s War with unique insights into their society and culture
Mary Rowlandson was married to the Reverend Joseph Rowlandson in Lancaster, Massachusetts when she and her three children were captured in an Indian raid on February 10, 1676. For eleven weeks, Mary and her children traveled with the raiding party which included losing her youngest daughter to her wounds sustained in the original attack, observing native culture and societal structure, and eventually meeting Metacom (“King Philip”), the Wampanoag chief leading native efforts to halt the continued expansion of Puritan settlements into Massachusetts. Six years after being “redeemed” or ransomed and reunited with her family, Mary’s book became the first “American” best seller and the prototype for a genre of literature known as “captivity narratives.”
