Fire & Emerg Services Admin E

Each of the five prompts has two parts. In the first part, you will research and critique a problem and solution that has already been determined and implemented by another department. In the second part, you will apply your research and critique to a similar problem in a different department. If you are already familiar with a department (for example you are a Captain in a department), then you may research a community relations plan from a neighboring department that they developed and implemented five years ago for part one. You will use your critique of their plan and its implementation to propose a plan for your own department to develop a community relations program. You may choose from the following five prompts, which are based on NFPA standards.

1) NFPA 1021 6.5 Inspection and Investigation 6.5.2 Research a successful response to a fire safety problem. Offer a presentation of the identification process, planning response, and successful implementation of the plan (e.g. a new law, policy, or program). Offer a critique of those processes. Apply the lessons learned to develop and propose a plan, given an identified fire safety problem in your own community, so that the approval for a new program, piece of legislation, form of public education, or fire safety code would be facilitated.

2) NFPA 1021 6.8 Emergency Management 6.8.1 Research a successful plan for the integration of fire services resources in a community’s emergency management plan. Offer a presentation of the identification process, planning response, and successful implementation of the plan (e.g. a new policy based on a disaster or updating process). Offer a critique of those processes. Apply the lessons learned to develop a plan for the integration of fire services resources in your community’s emergency management plan, given the requirements of the community and the resources available in the fire department, so that the role of the fire service is in compliance with local, state/provincial, and national requirements.

3) NFPA 1037 5.4 Community Relations. 5.4.1 Research a successful community relationship plan. Offer a presentation of the identification process, planning response, and successful implementation of the plan (e.g. a new volunteer/career organization or cooperative). Offer a critique of those processes. Apply the lessons learned to develop relationships with community groups in your own community. Ensure that you give a description of local groups and organizational policies for relationships with community groups, attendance at community meetings, and participation at community events, so that a schedule is established for ongoing contacts.

4) NFPA 1037 5.4 Community Relations. 5.4.2 Research a successful system of safety presentations within a community. Offer a presentation of the identification process, planning response, and successful implementation of the plan (e.g. a new education program or policy). Offer a critique of those processes. Apply the lessons learned to develop a means of presenting safety proposals to community groups, given a list of groups with shared concerns, and an understanding of relevant safety measures, so that the justification for the safety proposal is provided, issues are explained, and solutions, impacts, and benefits are stated.

5) NFPA 1037 5.4 Community Relations. 5.4.3 Research a successful media communications strategy. Offer a presentation of the identification process, planning response, and successful implementation of the plan (e.g. a new policy, program, or agreement with various media outlets). Offer a critique of those processes. Apply the lessons learned to create a media communication strategy and policies for your own community. Ensure that you provide a list of media outlets such as newspaper, radio, web pages, and television; characteristics of local media including deadlines; and the resources to provide media with accurate information, so that consistent and accurate prevention information is disseminated in an understandable manner.
