Concerts: During the semester each student is expected to attend two live jazz performances and write one two-page paper describing both experiences. Performances may be on or off campus. They may be formal or informal. They may be free or expensive. They may be professional, amateur, or students. But, they must be live performances. There is no particular format for this paper, because every experience is different. Use your imagination. Your report can be personal and informal, but it needs to include enough specific information to convince me that you actually were in attendance. I don’t really need ticket stubs or programs.

 

Book Report: After reading Crow’s Jazz Anecdotes, each student will write a   two-page book report. Once again there is no specific format. Use your imagination and feel free to be personal and informal.

About one page to analyse the play Chushingura: The Forty Seven Samurai, the plat contains 6 elements,

 

1. Plot. We will consider whether plays are episodic, climactic, and cyclical, what makes it so.

 

A.  What is the point of attack?

 

2.Character. We are considering stock, archetypal or complex characters 

 

3. Thought. Please identify the value system that infuses the play.

 

4. Diction. Is the language high-flown or mundane?  What is the result? 

 

5.  Music. In addition to melody (as in a chorus), please consider the rise and fall of action in the timing of inciting incident, complication, crisis, climax and resolution (or denouement)

 

6.  Spectacle. Here is the “catch-all” for stage directions that tell you what the playwright expects to see on the stage as well as what you envision.

Next, you’ll need to identify the meaning behind this text.  Here’s where your situational memo will come in handy.  Don’t just copy the memo wholesale into your paper.  Instead choose a few areas to highlight and expand upon. Consider whether this representation of Portland (or its constituent parts) is accurate or not?  You’ll probably need to include some source material in this section.  For example, if the text represents Portland as a healthy city, you’ll want to have facts and figures hat support or refute that representation. Finally, address the implications of this representation.  Does the producer of this text have a particular goal in mind?   Does the text accomplish that goal?  Is this positive or negative for the city?  Why?   Could the text be positive for one community but have negative connotations for another?  In the conclusion, take things a step further.   Should this text be distributed further?   Why or why not?  Do new texts need to be produced to counter this particular representation of the city?  How does this text fit into the larger body of representations of Portland? Accurately cite any fact, idea or quote that is not your own using a proper citation form
