Jack Johnson has been an employee of ABC Inc. for the past 4 years.   During that time he has been passed over for promotion on two separate occasions. Rochelle, Jack’s manager, believes Jack is not performing his current job at full capacity.  She attempts to motivate Jack by promising that in return for improved performance, Jack will receive a new position that will provide him a higher level of acceptance and respect within ABC Inc; however, the position does not include a pay raise. In spite of Rochelle’s offer Jack’s performance does not improve.

Using Vroom’s VIE theory discuss why Jack’s performance did not improve. In addition, discuss other offers of motivation that could be used to motivate Jack?                   

The paper will consist of an Introduction, a Literature Review, an Hypothesis, and a Method section. 

What is a Lit Review?     A brief review of the literature means that you will report (search some key words in the on-line library in Psych Abstract or some such area) on studies that are similar to the one you propose. This might include an old classic study that launched the field of study in your topic but should include some background studies and at least one rather recent study into the same area as yours. For this assignment, 4 or 5 quick reviews would suffice. The reviews are typically no more than a paragraph explaining in simple terms, who did the research (with the APA style “year” of the study in parentheses), what they were hoping to explore, and what the results of their study were.

 

What is a Hypothesis? At the conclusion of your review of the literature you will summarize your research idea and then state your hypothesis. A good proposal hypothesis should directly state, without reservations, the expectations of the study. For example, “Hypothesis: The experimental group will significantly improve their scores on the _____measure after viewing the role play of bullying behavior.” Or another example: “Hypothesis: Subjects will show decreased empathy on a survey of compassion and empathy for the learners that used the weakest excuses.”   Or, “Hypothesis: There will be a significant difference between the groups with the experimental group having higher scores than the control group.”

Discussion—Visual Searches

You probably notice every day that some objects in the environment are easier to notice than other objects. For example, workers at sports stadiums often wear bright yellow shirts, which are very easy to see. While the crowd may blend in together, the workers are prominent and are easy to notice when you want a drink or something to eat. In this assignment, you will further explore how people engage in visual searches and what features of a stimulus make a search easier.

Think of a time when you had to locate someone in a crowd, such as a participant in a parade, a friend in a packed theater, or a runner in a marathon. Based on your experience, respond to the following:

• Were you successful in locating the person? What strategy did you use?
• Did your search make use of the pop-out effect? How? If not, how might using the pop-out effect have resulted in a successful or quicker search?
• Did you conduct a conjunctive search? If yes, how did the number of distracters and features affect your search?
• Using the principles you have read about in this module, how would you make material in a long e-mail stand out in order to ensure that the reader notices it?

Visual searches are also very important in warnings. Warnings need to stand out from their background. The warning must first be noticed, then read and understood. For example, a stick figure could be performing an ambiguous action and have an “X” through it. You therefore understand that while you are not supposed to perform some action, you do not understand what that action actually is.

Give two examples of a poor warning. Did you understand them? Why did you have difficulties with them? What features could be modified to make the warnings more effective?

Write your initial response in 4–5 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
