What is a project and what are the main attributes?
A project simply refers to an activity that is carried out to meet a unique product or service. Therefore, various activities are conducted and these activities are mainly undertaken to accomplish routine activities that cannot be considered as projects (Richardson et al., 2020). The main attributes of a project include first the project has a start and a finish point. Secondly, projects have a budget and this budget should be capitalized. Third, the prototypes of a mass-produced product are considered as a project. Furthermore, a project seeks to make instant changes where necessary and finally a project has several steps that are used in making the project life cycle.
How is a project different from what most people do in their day-to-day jobs?
Projects are different from the normal jobs carried out day by day. This is because; projects are usually focused on the goals (Fleming & Koppelman, 2016). Therefore, they have a beginning and also have ending dates as compared to the day to day operations. Additionally, the operation is work done to sustain the business whereas projects end when their objectives have been attained or when the project has been terminated.
Discuss the importance of top management commitment and the development of standards for successful project management. Provide examples to illustrate the importance of these items based on your experience on any type of project.
Top management is regarded as the main factor that is associated with the success of information technology projects (Mccollum, 2015). Therefore, it is important to get and maintain this support. Top management is also important in helping managers and specifically projects managers to acquire adequate resources and approve unique project requirements. This will also enhance cooperation from other parts of the organization and support as a mentor to the project managers.
Discuss the unique challenges that an IT project presents.
Various IT challenges face projects. One includes poor communication between teams. This is the biggest challenge since the IT project manager is trying to collaborate with various teams and individuals in remote locations (Gisler, Gray, Roman & Rothstein, 2018). Therefore, all of this can make the whole process very inefficient. Another issue is murky delivery models. When a new model is introduced within the project like a technology model, it becomes hard to manage such a challenge. Therefore, it means that adapting will be difficult hence being a challenge. Another issue is constant communication among stakeholders. Stakeholders need to know every step and every action taken in the project. This will assist them as they deal with departments managing contracts, procurements, and interacting with finance and accounts. Therefore, this becomes a challenge in managing IT projects.
