Portfolio Instructions

The Portfolio is intended to encourage your reflection on course topics in personally meaningful ways. Your responses should be within the page length guidelines provided for each assignment and no longer than that. I encourage you to compose outlines and rough drafts prior to writing up the final entries to gauge the length of your project. These should be written in Word or other files, which are compatible with the Turnitin system. Be sure to save electronic files on your computer or flash drive. Responses should be single-spaced using 12 point font. The Portfolios are turned in, as one document that includes everything, toward the end of the semester as listed on the course calendar.

The title page should include your name and title of the course. Beyond that, the design of the cover page (graphics or photos) is up to you. If you do include graphics within the project those materials will not count as space toward your writing page limits. Include a table of contents and remember to number the pages. A sample table of contents is provided at the end of this document.

Submit your Portfolios online by the deadline using the directions provided for the Turnitin system. Note that Turnitin is a plagiarism detection system. Do NOT directly copy the work from your sources (be sure to provide proper attribution of sources used) and do NOT copy the work of a previous student in the class. The Portfolios are individual projects.

Projects must be received by the deadline. Late assignments will lose 20% of total points and will be accepted only up to two days (48 hours) beyond the deadline. Plan ahead and submit your materials on time to avoid losing points needlessly. Note that Turnitin provides a receipt for materials submitted. If you have trouble submitting your work, you must immediately contact me (before the deadline); otherwise your project is considered late. If you follow directions there will be no problem with your submission of the project. Thousands of my students have done it.

For each section of the Portfolio, copy each heading and sub-heading then provide your response. Use the headings and subheadings provided in each assignment to structure your portfolio and make your table of contents .

If you answer the questions thoughtfully and thoroughly you will do a good job on the Portfolio. Students who put forth an earnest effort and answer the questions fully and in accordance with the instruction ALWAYS do well. In other words, if you follow the directions and put forth an honest effort you have nothing to worry about. All you have to do is read the directions carefully and provide responses to the best of your ability.

1. On Tuesday, November 3rd the United States held elections for the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the presidency. It saw the Biden campaign flip a number of states into the Democratic column, but it saw the Republicans gain seats in the House and (presumably) hold on to the Senate—in the face of projections of major Republican losses in both. Moreover, the election saw voter turnout rise significantly, to the highest level in over a century.

Based on the material we looked at this semester (you do NOT needed to make use of anything outside the course), tell me two things. First, why was voter turnout so much higher in this election cycle? Second, what reasons can you give for why the results of the election seem to favor both sides at the same time? In doing this, make sure to draw upon material from both before and after the midterm.

2.Groups like the National Rifle Association are often times held up as having a huge amount of sway in American politics, even though they directly represent a relatively small number of Americans. Indeed, as we talked about this term, most successful interests groups are relatively small (at least compared to the nation as a whole). So, how can a group that is so small (relatively speaking) play such a big role in shaping our nation’s policies? In answering this make sure to think about and touch on (at minimum): the way interest groups operate, the way we vote, and the way we structure elections and representation in the United States. (Do not spend your time simply talking about the NRA; not hat the purpose of the question).

3. In terms of the allocation of power within the federal government the Constitution has remained largely unchanged since the founding of the United States. Yet, even the briefest examination of American politics shows a dramatically different balance between political actors and branches today than would have the case 100 or 200 years ago. Given the fixed nature of formal constitutional authority and the obviously more changing nature of informal power, please answer this question: Based off of your semester-long of American politics, do you believe that formal constitutional ‘authority’ or informal ‘power’ is more important to how our political system works? Citing examples, tell me why you believe this to be the case.

Indeed, one of the questions was rather ridiculous and is the basis of your extra credit for this exam.
