Transferable skill: Critical Thinking

Improving thinking, including problem-solving and creativity, by applying intellectual standards such as clarity, precision, logic and reflection. In this profession, critical thinking is necessary for situations where the work must assess client needs and find appropriate resources. Human service workers are problem-solvers.

Consider the following scenario:

Janie is a 34-year old mother of three. At present, she is separated from her husband of six years. Her children are Chloe, age seven, Devin, age four and Brenden, age two. Janie is a full-time mom and stays home to care for her children. She lives in a 3-bedroom apartment and receives child-support assistance from her husband. Janie comes to your human service organization because she is struggling to manage behavioral disorders regarding her daughter Chloe. On several occasions the school has contacted Janie informing her that Chloe is acting out at school as evidenced by oppositional behavior with teachers, arguing and fighting with peers, and poor academic performance. Janie reports similar oppositional behavior at home and states that Chloe has frequent nightmares. Her four-year-old brother is beginning to show signs of oppositional behavior.

Janie says that she is feeling overwhelmed and stressed in parenting her children. She complains of bouts of depression. She is also concerned that her husband’s child support is insufficient to sustain the family’s basic needs. Her husband rarely visits her or the children.

You are the caseworker assigned to work with Janie. Your agency is limited in the services it provides. Your organization’s primary function is to screen clients who may qualify for specific types of financial assistance for school supplies, childcare items e.g. formula, diapers, clothing and discounted school lunches.

In a 2-page address the following: Identify the key problems in this scenario. Provide a rationale for the problems that you have identified as being the most important to address.

Having identified key problems, review services/agencies in your community that would be a good and appropriate match for your client. Describe the services provided and defend your decision to refer to these agencies.

Discuss organizations or agencies that can provide the most services without the client having to be referred to multiple agencies. This is not always possible. Discuss options in your community and identify any gaps in services.

How to find a topic for a Current Events Presentation:

Read a lot of news stories. Look wherever you get your current news information.

Limitation: The news story upon which you base your summary should be within the past year. Your focus should be on civil law, not criminal law.

The structure of the paper:

The writing has a two-page limit (not including title, header, pasted document/article text, or citations; those are extra.) There is no minimum length requirement

1.The facts of the case.

In chronological order, recount all the relevant events that took place. Remember that in this case I haven’t seen the facts before, so that you will probably have to supply more complete information so that I can understand what is going on.

Please put the facts in your own words, rather than a set of quotations from a news source. I recommend that you not even be looking at the news source (if there is one) when writing this section.

Note that there must be one set of facts throughout the whole paper. If there is competing testimony as to what happened, then decide which ones are true and stick with those facts. (Don’t tell me how you made your decision; I don ‘t care. The point is that you should not waste time in this paper arguing about “what really happened.”)

Note also that the facts your source (person or news article) thinks are important aren’t necessarily the ones that really are relevant for purposes of the legal arguments you are making. Include all relevant information, but exclude details that have no bearing on the legal questions you will be discussing.

In this section you are discussing facts alone; do not bring up law or arguments yet.

2.Identify the law/ lawsuit involved.

At this point, tell me exactly who the parties or potential parties, are, and what legal area is involved(name of the tort, breach of contract, etc.). Your arguments will make no sense unless I know who the plaintiff and defendant are.

3.Give the conclusion or present status of the matter/case.

  1. Designing a community program in Human Services begins by completing a needs assessment. The purpose of the needs assessment is to see what programs or services are already being offered in the community and where there are possible gaps. This week you will submit a workplace or community needs assessment.
    If you are currently not working in a Human Services organization, begin by assessing what services are in your community. You can plan a program based on the information you collect and what you feel your community needs. If you are working in a Human Services organization and want to create a program for it, begin with an assessment of the organization’s existing programs and plan your program from there.Your needs assessment should be formatted in an outline and include the following information:

    1. Community name
    2. Description of the community, including statistical information and demographics about the community (for example, population, age, race, gender, income, education, housing, poverty, etc.)
    3. In your description, include the possible needs of this population.
    4. Community needs that are currently being met and how (specific agencies or programs)
    5. To discuss this, consider the various populations that are found within a community that potentially could seek Human Services assistance (for example, families, elderly, youth, mentally ill, substance abusers, pregnant teens, victims of domestic violence, unemployed). Then, consider the services available to these populations.
    6. Community needs that were identified as not being met or populations not served
    7. To discuss this, consider populations that may be underrepresented or that are not being served as well as they could be. For example, perhaps a program exists but clients can’t easily get to it.
    8. Choose and identify one of the unmet needs to research in order to create a program for your project. (You will use this research to help you complete next week’s course project assignment, program design.)

    Completed outlines should be 1-2 pages in length. Include any resource information in APA format.
